Why does paint fade?

Generally, people think that faded paint is a clearcoat fault and if this happens the clearcoat manufacturers get blamed but what actually causes paint to fade? Let’s take a look.

Automotive paint fades over time due to a combination of environmental factors and the chemical properties of the paint. Here are the key reasons:

1. UV Radiation Exposure

Cause: The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays break down the chemical bonds in the paint and clear coat.

Effect: Over time, the pigments lose their vibrancy, and the paint appears faded or dull.

2. Oxidation

Cause: Oxygen in the air reacts with the paint’s surface when the clear coat wears away.

Effect: Oxidation creates a chalky appearance, further dulling the paint.

3. Environmental Contaminants

Pollutants: Road salt, acid rain, industrial fallout, and exhaust fumes can corrode and stain the paint.

Organic Contaminants: Bird droppings, tree sap, and dead insects contain acids that eat into the paint if not removed promptly.

4. Temperature Fluctuations

Cause: Expansion and contraction of the vehicle’s surface due to changes in temperature can cause micro-cracking in the clear coat.

Effect: These cracks allow moisture and contaminants to penetrate, accelerating fading.

5. Improper Maintenance

Cause: Failure to wash, wax, or apply protective coatings regularly can leave the paint exposed to harmful elements.

Effect: Dirt and grime build up, leading to surface abrasion and accelerated fading.

6. Quality of Paint and Clear Coat

Low-quality Paint: Inexpensive or poorly applied paint jobs may fade faster due to weaker pigments and binders.

Clear Coat: A thin or low-quality clear coat cannot adequately protect the underlying paint.

Prevention and Mitigation

UV Protection: Use waxes, sealants, or ceramic coatings with UV inhibitors.

Regular Washing and Waxing: Removes contaminants and maintains a protective layer.

Covered Parking: Reduces sun exposure and weathering.

Paint Correction and Recoating: Professional polishing and resealing can restore some vibrancy.

To summerise, clearcoat can fail because of many factors and it’s not just the clearcoats fault. Luckily, faded paint is usually rectified by a simple flat back and polish so this is one of the easier paint defects to rectify.
